I find my favorite spooky movies are not necessarily “Horror” movies. Instead, I like films that are a little strange and have a supernatural or magical element. I also enjoy historical horrors like The Witch or The Wind. Instead of listing my favorite movies to watch this time of year I thought I would make a short list of ones that don’t normally come up on top 10 Halloween movies lists. Hopefully you can find something new to cuddle up to on the couch this spooky season.
Mary Reily- A retelling of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde from the perspective of Jekyll’s maid. John Malkovich at his finest.
The Ritual- Ancient gods and backpacking, what’s not to love.
The Headhunter- Sometimes the best horror movies never show the monster.
Ed Wood- Technically not a scary movie but it’s a beautiful film and an underrated Tim Burton movie.
Brotherhood of the wolf- Set in 18th century France and loosely based on actual events. Watch it in French with subtitles.
Ravenous- A western that tackles the complexities of good, evil, and cannibalism.
Let me know in the comments what you think of these films, and feel free to suggest your own!
