Sunday Drive

Some of my fondest memories from childhood are when my parents would load up the car with a picnic lunch and we would go on a Sunday drive. It always felt like a grand adventure. The best part of a Sunday Drive is that you have no set destination so you can feel free to stop anytime you see something interesting. I find it refreshing in today’s world of Instagram famous travel locations to find beautiful places by accident. For example, a friend and I did a road trip around Scotland a few years ago, we were blown away by the ruins, castles, and dramatic natural landscape. It was only after our trip that I realized that many of the amazing places we experienced were actively sought out by photographers. I believe if we had planned the trip around “must see” destinations it would have taken away a lot of the magic. Now that I have my own kids, I like to continue the tradition of a Sunday drive. We often drive until we see a sign for a “scenic overlook” or “historic landmark.” Sometimes we just see a well-worn turnout and find a path that leads to a river or a grove of old growth trees. I won’t lie, the kids get a little feisty if we are driving for too long. We pack books and snacks but sometimes all they need is a short walk in the woods to tire them out.  One of life’s little joys is two sleeping babes in the backseat as you enjoy a scenic drive.
