Embracing Fall

Cultivating special ways to mark the change of seasons allows us to savor the passage of time. Fall has always been my favorite season, the crips air, smell of woodsmoke and frost, and the fun activities. It can also be a hard time of the year, the days are growing shorter, the freedom and sunshine of summer are gone and more time is spent inside. The following are a few ways I like to shift into fall, they help me celebrate the seasonal changes while also perking up my mood.

  1. Declutter and refresh. Everyone knows about spring cleaning but having a fall clean out is just as helpful to clear your closet before winter. Use a large plastic tub to pack away summer clothing and take out colder weather gear. Switching out your wardrobe is a great way to save space in your closet and you feel like you are getting brand new clothing. It also helps you recognize pieces you look forward to wearing. If you do not miss it that may mean it’s a good time to donate or sell it.
  2. Check out a cookbook from the library and try a new recipe. What is cozier than curling up with a book on a chilly fall day? Making that book be about cooking yummy fall foods. I love cooking in the cooler months, those cookies and soups warm your kitchen as they warm your soul.
  3. Don’t stop hiking! When the days get shorter and colder it is easy to want to stay inside, but fall is a wonderful time to explore local trails. Not only do you get to see all the beautiful fall colors but there are no bugs! I can’t think of much better than packing a thermos of apple cider and some fresh baked goods for a trail snack.
  4. Watch a fall movie. Staying active as the days shorten is a great way to keep spirits up. But let’s not discredit the joys of cuddling up with a good movie. I am partial to spooky films this time of year, but a classic rom com also does the trick, you can’t go wrong with Meg Ryan.
  5. Have a bonfire. This one of course depends on where you live and if there are fire restrictions. Now that we live in a place where it rains in the fall, and most fire restrictions have been lifted for the year, I am looking forward to having a small bonfire to welcome the autumn season. If you can’t have a fire where you live a festive candle can be just as good. The fire, no matter its source, is a reminder that warmer brighter days will return as we shift into the darker part of the year.

I hope you enjoyed my favorite ways to bring in the fall. What are some ways you like to shift into the changing season?
